Garadi Pett (Tulunadan Kalari / Kalari Payattu) - Pride of Tulunadu!!

There are several lineages/styles (sampradayam), In Kalari Pyattu. of which 'Thulunadan' is considered as the best. In olden times, students went to Tulunadu kalari's to overcome their defects (kuttam theerkkal). In Malyalam Shaitya like Northern ballad and other folklore speak about Thulunadan kalari and thulunadan Gurukkal. Even Kalari payattu word is from Tulu word Garodi Pettu (fight), there is no specific meaning for payattu in malyalam. iTs apambrasha of pettu. Folklores says Famous Kalari fighters like Arongodan Chekavar, Thaccholi othenan studied Thulunadan kalari by crossing Kadattnadu, Koalttanadu(nileswara) from where historical Thulunadu starts , but still Tuluvas failed to preserve this unique art style of Garadi with them, historically Malyalam ballads says there were 50 kalaris in Thulunadu and 42 in kadattanadu (kadppunadu in tulu) and 18 in kolattanadu, which were owned by Bunt/Nair, Thiya/Biruvas but if you see todays thulunadu there are122 spiritual gardais/kalaris which doesnt teach any martial arts which are just temples or worshiping centers of Billava community some are owned by Bunts. it was built in the memory of Tuluva/Biruva Legends of 15th century namely Koti chennayya, many of them are bulit in 19th century and 20 the century when Hindu society was practicing castism and Biruva community wanted to have their own spiritual centers.. But there are 5 non Baiderl/ Koti- chennayya Garodis in Udupi district and karkala taluk out of one is Nanayas Garodi in Hiriyadka from where legend Koti Chennays learnt martial arts, but now that also turned in to just merely worship center of Jumadi and other deities.Thulunadan kalaripayattu in vadakken style is better in all respects. It was written in the history and in vadakkan songs, the brave men like Thacholi Othenan, Chandu etc., who have obtained training in kalaripayattu, had gone to Thulunadan kalari and undergone further studies and rectified the defects in the training already obtained.. No body practice real Kalari from where Thulunadan style emerged, thank God that Mlayalis have preserved it and practice it. Presently Kalarippayatt is practised in many parts of Kerala. Different styles / methods of Payatts exists, among them Vadakkan style's 'Thulunadan' is considered as the highest.

Thulunadan Style: Vadivu (different body expressions, and movements that mimics different animals), Chuvadu(footworks or steps), Thayam (waiting for a chance to attack), Thancham (to make use of that chance) is highly stressed in thulunadan payatt, which makes it the highest among the other styles. Powerful and defined foot movements, the ability to execute the counter attack and the quality of the techniques is considered the best in thulanadan.
