In this article we are going to give an introduction to Koraga language.
Koraga is a distinct member of Dravidian family and is only remotely connected to Tulu. Koraga language spoken by the Koraga people, a scheduled tribe people. Koraga language is independently branched along with Tulu from south proto dravidian language family. Koraga shares many common cognates with Tulu.Four distinct dialects of Koraga language are:
1. Onti: Spoken in Udupi
2. Tappu: Spoken in Hebri
3. Mudu: Spoken in Kundapur
4. Ande: Spoken in midway between Tappu and Onti dialects & in Mangalore.
All the speaker who speak Onti dialect are bilingual with Tulu language has resulted a strong influence of Tulu on Onti Koraga dialect.
All the speakers who speak Mudu dialect are bilingual with Kannada language has resulted a strong influence of Kannada on Mudu Koraga dialect.
Because of the dominating influence of regional languages like Tulu & Kannada we shall not be able to decipher the original state of the Koraga language that might have existed in the antiquity.
In Tappu Koraga dialect of Hebri region, the "p" in Koraga words become "h" as in the case of words like:
portu —> hortu
pudar —> hudar
puge —> huge.
Tappu Koragas are multilinguals. They are conversant with both Tulu and Kannada languages apart from their mother tongue.
