ADVERBS ARE USED TO DENOTE THE PLACE, TIME MANNER OR CAUSE OF ACTIONS
1. Adverbs denoting place(ಓಳು - where, ಅವುಳು or ಅಳ್ಳ್ - there, ಇಂಚಿ - this side, ಅಂಚಿ - that side....etc)
- ಬಾಂಬೆ ಓಳ್ ಉಂಡು? - where is Bombay?
- ಬಾಂಬೆ ಇಂಚಿ,ಮದ್ರಾಸ್ ಅಂಚಿ - Bombay is here (in this direction), Madras is there (in that direction).
- ಮರಿಯಾಲೊಟ್ಟ್ ತಿರ್ತ್ಡ್ತ್ ಮೈನ್ದ್ ಏರ್ಂಡ್ - in the rainy season mist is rising from below,
- ಮೈನ್ದ್ ಬೊಕ್ಕ ಮರೆ (ಬರ್ಸ) ಮಿತ್ತ್ಡ್ತ್ ಬೂರೊಂದ್ಂಡ್ - dew and rain are falling from above.
2. Adverbs sigvifying time (ಇನಿ - today, ಎಲ್ಲೆ - tomorrow, ಇತ್ತೆ - now or this moment, ಬೊಕ್ಕ - afterwards, etc)
- ಇನಿ ಮರೆ ಬರೊಂದಿದ್ದಿ, ಎಲ್ಲೆ ಬರು - It is not raining today, it may come tomorrow.
- ಇತ್ತೆ ಮರೆ, ಬೊಕ್ಕ ದೊಂಬು - now there is rain, afterwards there will be heat.
Remark:
a) To show the commencement of an action or condition, frequently the adverb is construed with the instrumental case as →ಕೋಡೆಡ್ತ್ ಇಂಚಿ ಮರೆ ಬರೊಂದುಂಡ್ - It has been raining since yesterday.
b) To express the point of time at which any thing ends or is finished, the adverb takes the form of the dative case; ಇನಿಕ್ಕ್ ಆ ಬೇಲೆ ಮುಗಿಪ್ಪ್ಂಡ್ today that work will be done;
or
it is coustrned with the postposition ಮುಟ್ಟ as:
- ಕಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ - To the last
- ಈಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ - until here (till now)
- ಆಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ - until there
- ಈಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ ಬತ್ತ್ಜಿ - he did not come till now
- ಆಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ ಕಾಪ್ಪೊಡಾ? - shall I wait so long?
- ದೇವೆರ್ ನಮನ್ ಕಡೆ ಮುಟ್ಟ ಕಾಪ್ಪುವೆರ್ - God will keep us to the end.
3. Adverbs of mode or manner (ಬೇಕ quickly, ಮೆಲ್ಲ - slowly, ಸರ್ತ್ತ - straightly ಓರೆ - crookedly, etc) as:
- ಬೇಕ ಬಲ - come quickly
- ಮೆಲ್ಲ ನಡಪ್ಪ್ - walk slowly
- ಆಯೆ ಸಂತೋಷಟ್ಟ್ ಕೊರಿಯೆ - he gave it gladly
- ಪೊರ್ಳಾತ್ತ್ದ್ ಪಾಡಿಯೆರ್ - they sang nicely.
